Former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson skipped a tryout to become an XFL kicker, according to a report from ESPN.com. Johnson “informed the league Sunday that he had decided against participating” but did not comment publicly.

The 42-year-old Johnson tweeted last week about the opportunity to try out, with the hopes XFL success might lead to a spot on an NFL roster. Johnson posted a video on Instagram last month in which he practiced long field-goal attempts.

Johnson hasn’t played an NFL game since 2012, when he made one catch in the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl XLVI loss. The XFL is scheduled to kick off Feb. 8.
