— The community is invited to give blood in memory of Robert Uhrig at a special American Red Cross blood drive held in his memory Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Union-Scioto Administration Offices in Chillicothe.

Robert is remembered as a caring father, teacher and mentor, who spent his career teaching 23 years in the Union-Scioto School District and seven years in the Zane Trace School District. He also served as Dean of the Christian Union Bible College in Greenfield. He developed bleeding ulcers caused by medication used to treat MRSA, a form of bacterial infection, which caused him to receive 11 blood transfusions as part of his treatment. He passed away at age 72 in 2007.

Robert’s family invites the community to give blood in his memory. “Our father made an impact on many people while he lived,” said Christy Leslie, Robert’s daughter. “We would love to see many people give blood in his name to help others in need of transfusions.”

“There are so many reasons why someone may need blood that we don’t even realize,” said Jessica Hayden, donor recruitment account manager for the Red Cross. “We take for granted that blood will be there at the hospital when we need it, but it can only come from generous volunteer donors. Giving blood in Robert’s name is a wonderful way to remember him and potentially help others.”

Every two seconds in the United States blood is needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations every day for the patients at about 2,500 hospitals nationwide, including 41 hospitals in Central Ohio.
